President of Ukraine and Prime Minister of Australia discussed prospects of cooperation in energy sphere

"Australia shares solidarity with the people of Ukraine. In recent months, we've been providing moral support and economic assistance for Ukraine," the Prime Minister of Aystralia Tony Abbott.

In the course of the working visit to Australia on December 11, President Petro Poroshenko has held a meeting with Prime Minister of Australia Tony Abbott.

The President of Ukraine and the Prime Minister of Australia have discussed a series of issues, particularly in energy sphere. "We have agreed to begin cooperation in energy sphere and discussed the opportunity of using Australian uranium for our atomic power stations," the President has told. The parties have also agreed to elaborate the issue of the Australian coal supply to Ukraine in the nearest time. "In terms of uranium and coal export to Ukraine, Australia is superpower. Energy security is extremely important for Ukraine. It is a great opportunity for both Australia and Ukraine," Tony Abbott has noted.

The parties have also discussed coordination of actions at multilateral level, particularly in the framework of the UN. Petro Poroshenko has expressed gratitude for the financial support from Australia in the amount of $100 million that will provided within the IMF, as well as for the assistance to the Ukrainian army. Tony Abbott has informed on the decision to provide assistance for the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the amount of more than $2 million. The interlocutors have discussed the possibility of Australia's participation in the donor conference that is to be held at the beginning of 2015.

The parties have also discussed the intensification of cooperation in agriculture.

Prime Minister Abbott has highly evaluated the first state visit of the Ukrainian President to Australia. He has reaffirmed the intention of the Australian government to provide further support to Ukraine. "Australia shares solidarity with the people of Ukraine. In recent months, we've been providing moral support and economic assistance for Ukraine," Tony Abbott has emphasized.

Petro Poroshenko has expressed gratitude to the Australian government for the active support of sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine. "Thank you for unity and solidarity with Ukraine," he has noted.

The Head of State has emphasized that Ukrainians sympathized with the loss of people as a result of the MH17 plane crash, which ended up with 38 Australians dead. "Ukraine does everything for the investigation into the tragedy to be independent, open and efficient. The perpetrators must be brought to justice," the President said.

Petro Poroshenko has invited Tony Abbott to visit Ukraine at the beginning of 2015. The Prime Minister has informed that the opening of the Australian embassy in Kyiv was to be held in February. "I am confident that the embassy's opening will enhance our cooperation," the President of Ukraine has noted.
